Position Overview

We are seeking a Disability Management Specialist to support employees experiencing occupational or non-occupational illness or injury by facilitating safe, timely, and sustainable return-to-work outcomes.

As a key member of the Disability Management team, you will collaborate with employees, leaders, healthcare providers, union representatives, insurers, and other stakeholders to provide effective case management services. Through proactive coordination and evidence-based disability management practices, you will help reduce lost time, support employee well-being, and contribute to organizational productivity and success.

This is a full-time, in-office role, located at a client office in downtown Calgary.

Key Responsibilities

Disability Case Management

    • Manage disability and return-to-work cases for employees who are unable to perform their regular duties due to illness or injury.
    • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized return-to-work and accommodation plans.
    • Facilitate early intervention strategies that support safe and sustainable return-to-work outcomes.
    • Ensure all case management activities align with applicable legislation, collective agreements, policies, and best practices.

Stakeholder Collaboration

    • Build and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including:
      • Operations leaders and managers
      • Human Resources professionals
      • Occupational Health and Health Services teams
      • Treating physicians and healthcare providers
      • Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) representatives
      • Disability benefit and insurance providers
      • Union representatives
    • Lead return-to-work and case review meetings as required.
    • Provide guidance and support to leaders and employees throughout the disability management process.
 

Assessment and Accommodation

    • Review medical and functional information to determine appropriate workplace accommodations and return-to-work opportunities.
    • Coordinate Independent Medical Evaluations (IMEs), Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs), and other assessments when needed.
    • Provide recommendations for complex cases where accommodation options may be limited within the organization.

Documentation and Compliance

    • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential employee case records within the organization's disability management and information systems.
    • Safeguard sensitive employee information and ensure compliance with privacy and confidentiality requirements.

 

Qualifications

Education

    • Registered Nurse (RN) designation with Occupational Health Certification is preferred; or
    • Degree in Health Sciences, Disability Management, Rehabilitation, Occupational Health, Human Resources, Kinesiology, or a related field may be considered.
    • Further education or certification in Disability Management, Return-to-Work Coordination, or a related discipline is considered an asset.

Experience

    • Minimum of two years experience in disability management, return-to-work coordination, claims management, occupational health, or a closely related field.
    • Demonstrated experience managing complex disability and accommodation cases involving multiple stakeholders.

 

Knowledge and Skills

    • Strong understanding of disability management principles, workplace accommodation practices, and return-to-work programs.
    • Knowledge of workers' compensation legislation and claims processes.
    • Familiarity with applicable employment, human rights, privacy, and occupational health and safety legislation.
    • Excellent case management, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
    • Strong communication, facilitation, and relationship-building abilities.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, while maintaining attention to detail and confidentiality.
    • High initiative, a personal working style that is flexible and responsive to client needs
    • Proficiency with case management systems, electronic medical records (EMR), and Microsoft Office applications. Prior work in Cority and HR systems is an asset.
